These are just the tip of the iceberg of the challenges faced by many media workers in Latin America, where experts say the status of press freedom is increasingly worrisome. The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed in a press conference that they believed the crime was linked to his journalistic work. Last week, the Mexican president criticized the US State Department’s report on human rights in the world, which refers to concerns over press freedom in Mexico, saying that US authorities should “be respectful”. In a publication in social network X, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez said US officials are not concerned about the human rights of Cubans and that the United States has its own human rights violations. Southern California’s infamous Santa Ana winds were barreling through Los Angeles as Sara Kramer and Sarah Hymanson prepared to host a garden party to celebrate the May 7 release of their first cookbook, “Kismet.” But as seasoned chefs and restaurant owners — they opened their Middle Eastern-inflected East Hollywood restaurant, also called Kismet, in 2017 after bonding in the kitchen at Brooklyn’s Glasserie over a decade ago — the two women have plenty of practice keeping cool in stressful situations. “We were like, ‘It’s going to die down, it’s going to die down,’” said Hymanson, 37, of the gale. “And if it doesn’t, then we’ll figure it out.”Indeed, just before 5:30 p.m., when guests were set to arrive at the Echo Park hilltop home that Kramer, 38, shares with her partner, the comedian Emil DeRosa, 34, and their goldendoodle, Kevin, the gusts subsided and the gray skies gave way to a golden sunset. Suddenly, the garden — which features a winding pathway scented by jasmine bushes and herbs that leads down to a grove of loquat, fig and Blenheim apricot trees — felt like an ideal place for a celebration. Chase Valencia, 40, who co-owns Lasita, a modern Filipino restaurant in the city’s Chinatown, took in the setting, admitting, “I came to this dinner because I really wanted to check out her house!”

At least 13 people have been killed and 21 are missing after heavy rains drenched southern Brazil, prompting a state government to send rescue helicopters in search of stranded residents, the authorities said on Thursday. The torrential rains that poured over the state of Rio Grande do Sul in recent days were well above normal for this time of year, according to experts. The rains swelled rivers across the state’s low-lying central valley region, flooding towns, causing a bridge to collapse, blocking roads and setting off mudslides. One town, Canudos do Vale, was left isolated with no electricity or communication. In the town of Candelária, residents awaited rescue helicopters on the roofs of their flooded homes.

The Tesla CEO may be rehiring some of the laid off staff, according to a Bloomberg report. Musk confirmed a slower growth rate for Tesla, which could impact other EV carmakers. Still, the job cuts concerned EV executives at companies like Rivian, Ford, and General Motors, according to the Bloomberg report. AdvertisementThe departure of the senior director for charging infrastructure, Rebecca Tinucci, meant these brands lost a main point of communication, the Bloomberg report said. "It may be possible Mr. Musk will reconstitute the EV charger team in a bigger, badder, more Muskian way," Pinter said.

I would have chosen Google either wayIf Google didn't increase its total compensation offer, I would've had a really tough decision to make. Both China and the United States have said they were hoping for progress on a few smaller, pragmatic fronts, including improving communications between their militaries and easing travel between the countries. But they remain at a standstill on fundamental strategic issues, including trade policies and territorial conflicts in the South China Sea and over Taiwan. And with other disputes looming, both sides acknowledged the danger of the relationship sliding into further conflict. The Biden administration is deeply concerned that cheap Chinese exports are threatening U.S. jobs, and is worried about China’s support of Russia in the Ukrainian war. And China has accused the United States of working to encircle Chinese interests in the Pacific.

While the spring housing market has been plagued with low supply, high prices and spiking interest rates, would-be homebuyers are focusing on new construction. New homes have more incentives and availability than previously owned ones. "There's more opportunity in new construction," said Nicole Bachaud, a senior economist at Zillow Group. Meanwhile, sales for previously owned homes dropped by 3.7% from March 2023, the National Association of Realtors found. With 30-year fixed-rate mortgage rates sitting above 7%, homeowners who bought at much lower rates in recent years don't like the prospect of trading in their low rate for a higher one.

The first congestion pricing program in the United States will begin in New York City on June 30, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Friday, signaling the possible end of a bitter fight over a plan that promises to ease some of the worst traffic in the nation. With months still to go before the program’s scheduled rollout, legal and political clashes still threaten to dilute or stop it altogether. Philip D. Murphy of New Jersey, influential unions and some elected New York City officials — have ratcheted up a long-running effort to keep congestion pricing from taking effect. Under the program, most passenger cars will be charged $15 a day to enter a congestion zone below 60th Street in Manhattan. Taxi fares would increase by $1.25, and Uber and Lyft fares would rise by $2.50.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken is meeting officials in China this week as disputes over wars, trade, technology and security are testing the two countries’ efforts to stabilize the relationship. China is courting foreign investment to help its sluggish economy. At the same time, its leader, Xi Jinping, has been bolstering national security and expanding China’s military footprint around Taiwan and the South China Sea in ways that have alarmed its neighbors. Mr. Biden and Mr. Xi have held talks to prevent their countries’ disputes from spiraling into conflict, after relations sank to their lowest point in decades last year. But an array of challenges could make steadying the relationship difficult.

It all went to emphasize the kind of economic, educational and cultural ties that the United States is pointedly holding up as beneficial for both countries. But hanging over those pleasantries during his visit to China this week are several steps the U.S. is taking to sever economic ties in areas where the Biden administration says they threaten American interests. Even as the Biden administration tries to stabilize the relationship with China, it is advancing several economic measures that would curb China’s access to the U.S. economy and technology. It is poised to raise tariffs on Chinese steel, solar panels and other crucial products to try to protect American factories from cheap imports. The president signed it on Wednesday, though the measure is likely to be challenged in court.

"It resonates with both millennials and Gen Zers, which I think indicates that Gen Z is feeling the same 'girl-boss' pressures that millennials famously grew up with," said Casey Lewis, a social media trend forecaster. "I'm a millennial and I grew up like I needed to maximize every minute of the day," Lewis said. And yet, even in cases where women are now breadwinners, the division of labor at home has barely budged, the Pew report found. "But we also live in an environment of layoffs and rising costs, so not being productive isn't really an option," she added. Even though you're not reading the news, you're still seeing how the economy is impacting peers.

It shows a curated look at women embracing domesticity as the antithesis of what other young women are experiencing, who are "working hard and barely scraping by," said Casey Lewis, a social media trend forecaster. Evidence shows this is something few women are actually doing, and it's not a realistic lifestyle to aspire to. Young women, whether they're married or not, are expressing a desire to "take a step out of the professional rat race," Lewis said. "There's a lot of pressure on young women," she said. In cases where men are the primary breadwinners, it's more often women who take on the bulk of the caretaking responsibilities, experts say.
